Two days in Petrozavodsk

Day one on foot in the city, day two out in Karelia. There are two plans: a calm 130-kilometre loop and a long 510-kilometre run. Pick by weather and by how early you are willing to get up.

Day one: the city, no car needed

Everything here is within 2–3 kilometres of the apartments.

10:00Breakfast, then walk to the Onega lake embankment — 2.3–2.7 km, 20–30 minutes on foot
10:30–12:30Embankment: sculptures from sister cities, the Tree of Wishes, the view over Onega
12:30–13:30Lunch in the centre. Look for lohikeitto and kalitki — see what to try
13:30–15:00Gallery of Industrial History, Liteynaya square 1 — how the city began in 1703
15:00–17:00Old centre: Lenin Avenue, Kirov square, the Museum of Fine Arts
18:00–21:00The Musical Theatre of Karelia on Kirov square 4. Book evening tickets in advance

If you arrived by train and feel tired, cut the day down to the embankment and dinner.

Day two: two options

The calm one: Kivach and Martial Waters — 130 km

09:00Leave Petrozavodsk along the Kola highway
10:30Kivach waterfall — 80 km. Viewing platform, nature museum, pine forest. Allow an hour or two
12:30Martial Waters — another 30 km towards Girvas: Russia's first spa, founded in 1719
14:00Lunch and the drive back; you are home by about 16:00

A good choice with children, on a short winter day, or if you do not want to spend the whole day driving. See Karelia in winter for the cold-season version.

The long one: Ruskeala — 510 km round trip

08:00Departure along the Pryazha road, 255 km each way
11:30–12:00Arrive at the mountain park. The marble canyon is 460 metres long and over 50 metres deep
12:00–15:00Canyon and trails, optionally the underground tour to the Great Column Hall and the underground lake
15:00–15:30Lunch on site or on the road
16:00Head back, in Petrozavodsk around 19:30–20:00

This is a full day behind the wheel: about 500 kilometres and six to seven hours of driving. Do not combine it with Kivach on the same day. In winter, leave earlier — December daylight is about five hours.

If you have three days

Give the third day to Kizhi: in summer hydrofoils run from the river station, 68 km across Lake Onega in 1 hour 15 minutes. There is no winter water service, and the ice route depends on conditions, so it cannot be planned far ahead.

What to take on the road

  • Downloaded maps — mobile signal drops outside towns.
  • Cash for roadside cafés and park ticket offices.
  • A thermos. In Karelia this is not a luxury, it is how you survive until lunch.
  • In winter, winter tyres and extra time: roads are cleared, but not instantly.
